Windows

SmartScreen blocks your download

Error: Windows protected your PC
01

Check the link

Use prismlauncher.io download buttons — they point at GitHub release assets, not random mirrors.

02

Reveal Run anyway

Click More info on the SmartScreen sheet.

03

Proceed deliberately

Run anyway only when you trust the file, then finish the installer.

Fixed: Reputation improves as more players install the same unsigned build.

Windows

Missing MSVCP140.dll

Error: The program can't start because MSVCP140.dll is missing
01

Install Microsoft VC++

Grab the latest Visual C++ Redistributable (x64) from Microsoft for your Windows version.

02

Reboot if prompted

Some systems need a restart before the DLL path updates.

03

Launch again

Start Prism Launcher from the Start menu or desktop shortcut.

Check: Use the official Microsoft redistributable, not a third-party DLL drop-in.

Runtime

Java that matches the instance

01

Open instance settings

Highlight the instance — settings apply to that folder only.

02

Pick a Java build

Modern packs often want Java 17 or 21; older Forge may differ.

03

Allocate RAM wisely

Raise max memory for heavy packs but leave breathing room for the OS.

Fixed: Wrong global Java causes crash loops — per-instance paths fix that.

Migration

Bring MultiMC instances over

01

Back up the folder

Keep the original MultiMC instance directory until import succeeds.

02

Import in Prism

Add instance → choose the MultiMC-compatible import route.

03

Revalidate loader + login

Confirm Java path, loader version, and Microsoft account after the move.

Check: Worlds and mods should remain under the new instance path.

Gameplay

When mods refuse to load

Error: Game starts vanilla or crashes during mod init
01

Match the loader

Forge jars on Forge, Fabric on Fabric — cross-loader mixes fail fast or fail weird.

02

Match game version

A 1.20.1 mod will not run on a 1.21 instance without a compatible release.

03

Read the crash log

Open the instance log and remove the first missing dependency or corrupt jar.

Fixed: Clean Modrinth or CurseForge installs reduce version drift.

Security tooling

Antivirus ate the executable

01

Restore from quarantine

If AV removed PrismLauncher.exe, pull it back from the quarantine list.

02

Add a tight exclusion

Allow only the Prism install directory you trust — not whole drives.

03

Re-hash the file

Compare SHA256 on the GitHub 11.0.3 release page before keeping the exclusion.

Check: Launchers trigger heuristics. Deeper context lives on the Trust page.
